The first trailer for the upcoming animated movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was published today by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon. In addition to being adorable and promising a lighthearted, teen-oriented TMNT narrative, the teaser looks fantastic. Just disregard Seth Rogen’s bizarre antics.
TMNT began as an independent comic book series in 1984 that made fun of popular superhero conventions. But it immediately took off and became a huge property with a ton of comics, television episodes, movies, toys, books, games, and more. While the series has had some well-liked animated outings, the last fully animated TMNT movie was produced in 2007, which was more than 15 years ago. Hence, it seems like the right time for a new, high-budget animated TMNT movie, especially in light of Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse (2018), which demonstrated to studios that animated movies don’t always have to look like Pixar ripoffs.
The cast of TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is made up of well-known actors including Seth Rogen, Jackie Chan, John Cena, Paul Rudd, Maya Rudolph, and Ice Cube. Nonetheless, all four of the turtles are played by younger, lesser-known performers, and I believe this was the perfect decision. They appear to be wonderfully cast in the most recent Paramount trailer, which also demonstrates how stunning and awesome this movie appears.
The film’s aesthetic, according to director Jeff Rowe, was influenced by sketches he made when he was a high school student. And I suppose Spiderverse also gave the team more self-assurance to take a riskier turn. The overall result is great since each scene and set in Mutant Mayhem has been meticulously detailed, giving everything a hand-painted appearance. For instance, I adore how the clouds in the sky are merely pencil squiggles. I suggest pausing the clip several times to take in all the subtleties and how much of the picture actually resembles drawings from a teen’s notepad.
TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is coming together beautifully. I also neglected to mention that the soundtrack will primarily consist of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater tunes. Even though I’m not a huge TMNT fan, I can’t wait to see this film when it opens in theaters on August 4.
