According to Scheft, Richard Belzer passed away in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, surrounded by family in the south of France.
Richard Belzer, a popular stand-up comic, made his acting debut in the 1974 movie “The Groove Tube.” Also, he appeared in the first “Saturday Night Live” episodes.
Belzer’s portrayal of Detective John Munch in “Homicide: Life on the Street” from 1993 to 1999, however, is what most will remember him for. Belzer continued to play the part on “Law & Order,” making an appearance in the pilot episode in 1993. Belzer played the lead character in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” from its 1999 premiere until 2016, a staggering 326 episodes, according to IMDb.

Belzer’s angular, dark suits and glasses gave the frequently sarcastic yet devoted investigator an imposing yet likable presence, turning him into a TV star. He won the 2008 People’s Choice Award for Best Scene Stealing Star for his performance.
Comedian and SNL original cast member Laraine Newman tweeted, “I liked this guy so much—one of the hilarious persons ever.
In a tweet, Henry Winkler, an actor, and comedian encouraged Newman to remember Belzer as well. Richard, please go in peace, wrote Winkler.
Mariska Hargitay, a former SVU co-star with Belzer, commented on Instagram: “My dear, dear friend, farewell. You, your special brilliance, and your singular perspective on this odd world will be missed.”
“The angels are so fortunate to have you. Already, I can hear people laughing “said the actress.
Dick Wolf’s production business, Wolf Entertainment, which is responsible for the whole “Law & Order” franchise, also issued a statement.
One of television’s most well-known characters is Detective John Munch, played by Richard Belzer, according to Wolf.
Wolf continued, “Richard was the epitome of a professional, and we shall all greatly miss him. He injected laughter and delight into all of our lives.
Other works by Belzer include the drama “Santorini Blue,” the action movie “Scarface,” and the biopic of the late comedian Andy Kaufman called “Man on the Moon.”
His wife, the actress Harlee McBride, and his stepdaughters, Jessica and Bree, will continue to live.
