Meanwhile, having triumphed over Panama in the semi-finals, Mexico aims to clinch the Nations League title for the first time since its inception in 2019. And if El Tri defeats the US at AT&T Stadium, Jaime Lozano’s side will add to the CONCACAF Gold Cup they won last July.

Nine months ago, the USMNT earned $1 million for defeating Canada in the 2023 final. However, this year, CONCACAF has decided not to award a financial prize to the winners of the tournament.
Rivals prepared for a “dogfight”
Despite the absence of a winner’s check, the lack of prize money is unlikely to be a major concern for the teams. Now winless in six matches against their North American rivals, Mexico is focused on reclaiming its status as CONCACAF’s top team. The US, on the other hand, is eager to maintain bragging rights over its neighbors and remain the only nation to have won the Nations League.
“These matches are always a battle,” USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams told reporters ahead of this weekend’s final. “We’re familiar with a lot of the players in Mexico, which adds to the rivalry. We’re aware of their quality and ours.
“We understand the discussions about who will be the top team in North America, and of course, we want to continue to represent that and defend our title.”
When was the last meeting between Mexico and the USMNT?
Tonight’s clash will mark the first encounter between Mexico and the USMNT since their CONCACAF Nations League semi-final in June 2023 – a contentious match marred by altercations between players and misconduct by Mexican fans.
In a game won 3-0 by the Stars and Stripes, four players were sent off – César Montes and Gerardo Arteaga for Mexico, and Weston McKennie and Sergiño Dest for the US – and referee Iván Barton blew the final whistle six minutes early after El Tri supporters ignored warnings to stop chanting homophobic slurs.
