The announcement of Laurence Fishburne’s return to the MCU

Laurence Fishburne Announces His Marvel Cinematic Universe Return

The actor who plays Giant-Man/Goliath, Laurence Fishburne, revealed his comeback date to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a recent interview.

Fishburne himself seemed to have forgotten that he played Bill Foster in Ant-Man and the Wasp back in 2018. Those who are unaware of Fishburne’s MCU character are not alone.

The character hasn’t been referenced by the studio since that first appearance, despite Ant-Man franchise characters being in a number of Marvel films that have been both announced and released. Importantly, the Thunderbolts movie from 2024 will feature the return of his fictitious daughter Ava Starr (Ghost).

Yet in an interview for the upcoming John Wick Chapter 4, the actor made his comeback to the part official.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Goliath returns.

In an interview with Brandon Pope, Laurence Fishburne (Bill Foster/Goliath/Giant-Man) disclosed that he will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming second season of What If…?

Before announcing that “Bill Foster comes up in What If…? :,” Fishburne noted that Marvel has his “phone number so that if they need me, they know where to reach me.”

Fishburne: “I mean, they got my phone number so if they need me, they know where to find me.”

Pope: “I was shocked Bill Foster wasn’t in the new Ant-Man.”

Fishburne: “Ah, you know, Bill Foster shows up in ‘What If…?’ Yeah.”

Pope: “Oh, some voicework for that?”

Fishburne: “Yeah, yeah. Bill Foster shows up in ‘What If…?’ as Giant-Man actually. Yeah, it’s cool.”

Fishburne first stated that the character will go by the name Giant-Man, but scooper @CanWeGetToast changed it to Goliath. Fushburne has a history of forgetting details about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so even while the actor’s word is normally assumed to be accurate, it’s possible that the correction is accurate.

Fishburne has previously stated a desire to continue Bill Foster’s character in the Goliath role he assumes in the comic books. Stephen Broussard, an actor and Marvel executive, remarked in an interview with CBR from 2018 that while “there’s nothing particular to announce,” Foster is wonderful because you can kind of go in two different routes.

How Goliath Would Affect Season 2 of What If

What If… Season 2 episode focusing on what would happen if the Avengers formed decades before they did in the normal MCU chronology is rumored to include Bill Foster, according to speculation from @CanWeGetToast.

Given Bill’s documented timeline and the fact that he collaborated with Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, on Pym Particles, this would make sense. As a result, Bill might very well be a member of the Avengers team before the year 21.

As Stephen Broussard stated, it would be a route to pursue more storylines with Goliath/Giant-Man, thus it will be exciting for fans to witness this character in the past. Fans will also probably be able to see the former size-changer dressed up in What If…?, which is an intriguing possibility.

There is currently no set release date for What If…second ?’s season on Disney+, but it will happen soon.
